A newborn baby girl rests with her parents in the NICU

Sweet newborn baby girl {Cedar Rapids NICU photography}

“Imagine packing up and leaving for a three-day weekend away, and a month later, you still haven’t gone home.”

While visiting family near Waterloo, Jill and Alex Pick unexpectedly welcomed their third daughter Lincoln at 29 weeks. Lincoln was then taken to the NICU at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, and Jill remained there with her while her husband Alex and their older daughters traveled from Le Mars every weekend to visit (a five-hour trip one way).

I got to meet this amazing family through The Tiny Footprints Project, which provides photography sessions to NICU families at no cost to the parents. Lincoln had just finished a feeding when I arrived, so she was definitely in a milk coma.  She was such a rock star! She was one month old on the day of her session (we share a birthday!) and had just broken the four pound mark. Thankfully, she was able to go home around her due date.  I’ve been keeping in contact with her mom – Lincoln is now almost seven months old and is growing like a champ!  Here’s a peek into our session – thank you, Pick family!  <3

While we were incredibly lucky with our own little girl only needing the NICU for a few days, there are many other families who spend months there.  If you or someone you know has a baby in the NICU, please feel free to check out The Tiny Footprints Project’s Facebook page or website.  I serve all four hospitals in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City (St. Luke’s Unity Point, Mercy CR, Mercy IC, and UIHC), and there are many other TTFP-affiliated photographers across the US.  If you’re a photographer, TTFP is always looking for more volunteers!
