Diaper bag essentials { Iowa City newborn photographer }

Leaving the house after having a baby can sometimes feel like an Olympic sport. So much preparation can go into even the smallest outings. Having a diaper bag with essential items already packed can make the task feel a little less daunting. However, as babies grow and change, so do the items that you may need to bring with you when you leave the house. Check out our list of diaper bag essentials by age!

Newborn:

  • Diapers and Wipes: At least 6-8 diapers per day, plus extras for emergencies. Wipes also come in handy for more than just diaper changes.
  • Changing pad: A portable changing pad is great for diaper changes on the go or to put on top of public restroom changing tables.
  • Burp cloths: Spit-up and drool are pretty much non-stop in those early days.
  • Nursing cover or formula: If you are breastfeeding, you may want a nursing cover if you prefer more privacy while nursing in public. If you are formula feeding, bring enough formula, bottles, and water for the time you will be away.
  • Manual Breast Pump: If you are nursing or pumping, we highly recommend keeping an inexpensive manual pump in the diaper bag in case of emergencies.
  • Pacifier: If your baby takes a pacifier or binky, be sure to have a few of these on hand.
  • Extra clothes: At least one extra outfit in case of diaper blowouts or spills.

3-6 Months:

  • Everything listed above!
  • Toys: Soft toys that are easy to pack and clean.
  • Bibs: Small bibs for drool and spit up help keep baby’s clothes a little cleaner.
  • Baby Food: If your baby has started to eat baby food be sure to pack some along with a small bowl and spoon.

6-12 Months:

  • Everything listed above!
  • Snacks: If your baby is eating solid foods, pack snacks like cut-up fruits or veggies, crackers, cheese, or yogurt.
  • Sippy cup or bottle: If your baby is formula or breastmilk fed, bring extra bottles or a sippy cup if they are drinking water or other liquids.
  • Bibs: To keep your baby clean during meals.
  • Sunscreen: If you will be spending time outside, a baby-friendly sunscreen is a must.

1-2 Years:

  • Everything listed above!
  • Books or toys: Pack a small bag of books or toys to keep your toddler entertained during outings.
  • First-aid kit: Pack a small kit with essentials like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and infant pain reliever in case of bumps, scrapes, or other minor injuries.

Remember, these are just suggestions, and you may need to adjust based on your baby’s individual needs and preferences. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared, so don’t hesitate to pack a little extra just in case! Did we miss some diaper bag essentials? Let us know in the comments below!
