Baby products – overrated? { Cedar Rapids newborn photographer }

Creating a baby registry is overwhelming to say the least! There are so many baby products out there, and if you are a first-time parent, it is difficult to know what you will really need when you bring your baby home. Many companies market expensive products and make it seem like they are a must-have in order to survive life with an infant, but are they really worth it? Here are some baby products you might want to leave off of that registry:

  • Wipe warmers: Although they may sound convenient, most babies don’t mind cool wipes, and it’s a costly item that takes up space. It also often dries out baby wipes, which can end up costing you even more money.
  • Baby Formula Makers: “It’s like a Keurig for baby formula! How amazing is that?” Those might be your thoughts when seeing the fancy machines that can make a bottle in a matter of minutes…until you look at the price tag. You also need to consider the space it will take up and the amount of time you will actually be saving.
  • Expensive strollers: Basic strollers can be just as functional and durable as luxury models, and the additional features may not be worth the extra cost. Unless you live in a city where walking is your main mode of transportation or you are an avid outdoor runner, you can save some money by purchasing a less expensive stroller. You can also look for used high-end strollers on local resale pages to save some cash!
  • Changing table: A flat surface like a dresser or a floor mat can serve the same purpose as a changing table. If you are tight on space or want to save some money, this is one baby furniture item that you can skip.
  • Bottle warmers: Warming a bottle under running warm water or warming up a mug of water and placing the bottle in it can be just as effective. Many babies are also okay with room temperature bottles, so it’s good to wait and see if this is an item you will actually need. That being said – I have one in the studio and I absolutely love it! • Baby Laundry Detergent: Using separate laundry detergents can be confusing and expensive! Switching to a free & clear detergent for the whole family can save money and will be much easier when it comes to keeping up with never-ending baby laundry.
  • Baby Food Processor: If you choose to make your own baby food, it is not necessary to buy one of the processors specifically meant for baby food making. You can use a food processor that you already have or buy one that you can use long after your baby food making days are done.

It’s important to remember that every baby is different, and what works for one family may not work for another. Ultimately, the most important thing is what works best for you and your baby. Waiting until after your baby has arrived to get a feel for what you REALLY need is the best way to make sure you aren’t wasting money on baby products that you don’t need.

What do you think? Anything I should add to the list – or is there something on here that’s definitely worth the splurge? Let me know in the comments!
