Visiting new parents { Cedar Rapids newborn photographer }
Thinking about visiting new parents? Read this first!
The arrival of a baby is an amazing journey for parents, but it can also be an overwhelming one. The first days and weeks home from the hospital are full of sleepless nights, endless feedings, and just trying to figure out life with an infant. On top of all of those changes, a new baby often brings visitors.
While many parents want to introduce their baby to friends and family, sometimes a revolving door of visitors can also feel overwhelming. When visiting new parents, it is thoughtful to bring a few items to make their lives easier or offer to help in ways that show them you care. Here are some ideas that can make your visit one that new parents will look forward to:
- Food: Bring a casserole, baked goods, or ready-to-eat meals that can be easily reheated. Consider using disposable pans so they won’t have to think about washing and returning your cookware. New parents will appreciate having a quick and easy dinner option.
- You could also take the prep work out of snacks and bring washed and cut fruit or vegetables. Other snacks like cubed or string cheese, yogurt, smoothie packs, granola bars, or protein drinks are great ideas too!
- A gift for the baby: A soft blanket, stuffed animal, or a set of baby books is a sweet gesture for the new arrival.
- A gift for the parents: Gift cards for restaurant and grocery delivery services or anything that will make their lives a little easier. (May I suggest a local company? Chilled Freezer Meals!)
- Essential supplies: Offer to bring items such as diapers, wipes, or formula if you know the new parents are running low.
- Help with household chores: Offer to do laundry, wash dishes, or clean up around the house. This will take some of the burden off the new parents and give them time to rest and bond with their baby.
Remember, the most important thing you can bring is your support and willingness to help. Everyone is excited to see the baby, but be sure to ask about the well-being of the parents too. New parents often need emotional support more than anything else, so be a good listener and support them in any way you can.
